Cormac currently represents New Zealand in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in Europe. He is the 2021 New Zealand champion for both the 300 SuperSport and 150 SuperSport, winning the titles at the New Zealand Superbike Championship series – the youngest rider in history to achieve this.
After an impressive debut season, Cormac was selected to return to the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in 2022 where he’ll be racing against the fastest junior riders in the world, and he’s realistic about what it takes to be a champion on the world stage.
“To be the best, you have to compete against the best. For me, racing to become a world champion isn’t a dream – it’s a plan”.
Cormac’s eight-step plan is well defined, he wrote it when he was 12.
“I have already achieved the first three – including being a NZ champion and the first Kiwi rider to make it into the Rookies Cup. Step four is to compete in the Moto3 World Championship. My ultimate goal is to be a world champion”.
Balancing life on and off the track is a challenge for all sportspeople. Along with his physical training, Cormac works with performance coaches to improve his mental game and develop his mindset. As part of his training regime, he will compete in various events, including motocross, to maintain his fitness and riding skills.
Off the track, his profile is growing as an ambassador for the sport, and his sponsors.
“I would like to continue to be a role model for younger riders and give back to the sport. I am working with the Southland Motorcycle Club as a mentor for junior riders on the Kayo MiniGP 150cc motorbikes and look forward to hosting training sessions and supporting them trackside at events.”
Cormac is already nipping at the heels of some of New Zealand motorsports established legends. At the Burt Munro Challenge earlier this year he was the youngest rider in history to win the Junior Bears title.
‘I come from Burt Munro country so I guess it’s natural I want to take on the world like he did.”
With determination, planning and hard work, Cormac Buchanan is well on his way to becoming one of motorsport’s future legends.
