Check - your vehicle

Before you hit the road, it always pays to do a quick vehicle once-over to ensure everything is in tip-top shape.

  • The minimum legal depth for tyre tread in New Zealand is 1.5mm, but the more tread, the safer you and your vehicle will be. Check the tyre pressure - you can usually find the correct pressure level for your car inside the driver's door frame. Ensure there is no tyre damage, including objects stuck inside.
  • Check your windscreen, wipers and mirrors - wipers shouldn't show any signs of wear and tear. Clean your mirrors and windscreen (inside and out). Get any chips or cracks on your windscreen fixed, and top up your washer fluid before getting on the road.
  • Check your lights work, including your hazard, reverse, and brake lights; the lenses shouldn't be cracked or hazy. Nothing beats having your car checked by professionals.
  • Of course, your vehicle will have a current registration and warrant, but take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic for a service or head to a testing station where they'll check brakes, structure, steering and safety belts.

Follow - social media to find the local must-try places

Sure, we all know that Google reviews and Tripadvisor have ratings on local eats and activities - but why not hear the latest from the locals? Use social media to find the local hotspots for the freshest flavours and activities. Search for your destination or hashtag on Instagram and Facebook to get the latest!

Pack - the essentials

Make sure you've read our Precious Cargo blog - but here is a list of items you should keep in your car: your map, cash, notebook and pen, first aid kit, water, umbrella, phone charger, sunglasses and toilet roll. In the winter months, you will need an ice scraper and chains if you plan to drive roads that experience heavy snow and ice.

Snacks, a good playlist, and sunblock also never go amiss!

Tell - friends or family about your plans

It's always a good idea to let someone know about your plans in case of an emergency - it's helpful for someone to know where you are or where you plan to be.
